The ice hotel of Balea Lac, Romania opened this year on the Christmas Day and invites tourists to live a unique experience. Instead of swimsuits, towels or comfortable gowns holidaymakers should pack their warmest clothes, mittens and hats, as the average temperature of rooms is no higher than 2 degrees centigrade, or the ice would melt and the whole building would collapse.
BBC journalists were eager to experience themselves the sensation of sleeping on ice beds and produced a documentary that was aired the first day of Christmas. “It is advisable to dress a jacket when you go to bed,” they joked.
With «ice sound» being the theme chose by the hotel this year, the rooms were named accordingly: Jazz, Latino, Dance, Hip Hop, Chillout, Classical, House, Trance and Blues.
A night at the Ice Hotel costs 150 RON per tourist, plus another 250 RON for the festive New Year’s Eve dinner.
The hotel will stay open until April 2012. It can be reached only by cable car, from Balea Lac.

Hotelul de gheaţă de la Bâlea Lac s-a deschis în acest an chiar în ziua de Craciun. Turiştii să nu-şi imagineze că se vor tolăni pe fotolii în halate de baie la căldură, cum fac într-un hotel obişnuit, ci să-şi pregătească în bagaje cele mai groase haine şi neapărat căciuli, fulare şi mănuşi.
Aceasta pentru că temperatura de aici nu este mai mare de 2 grade Celsius. Altfel, gheaţa s-ar topi şi... adio hotel!
Ineditul loc turistic nu a trecut neobservat de jurnaliştii de la BBC, care au ţinut să vadă cu ochii lor şi să transmită cititorilor din lumea întreagă cum arată un pat îngheţat, chiar in prima zi de Craciun."E recomandabil să dormi îmbrăcat cu geaca", au glumit reporterii britanici.
Tema din acest an al hotelului este «ice sound» (sunetul gheţii - n.r.), iar camerele au denumiri în ton cu această temă: Jazz, Latino, Dance, Hip Hop, Chillout, Classical, House, Trance şi Blues.
O noapte de cazare la Ice Hotel costă 150 de lei de persoană. De Crăciun şi Anul Nou se mai adaugă 250 de lei pentru meniul festiv.
Hotelul va fi deschis până în aprilie 2012, iar accesul în zonă este posibil doar cu telecabina de la Bâlea Lac.
