Babies understand what their mothers  say, even when they speak in a language their children have never heard before, scientists claim. They found one-year-olds reacted in exactly same way to their mother’s voice regardless of whether she was speaking in English or Greek, according to Daily Mail.

It proves what mothers have long known – that babies pick up on tone of voice rather than the words. The researchers, from Cardiff University’s School of Psychology, observed babies as they watched their mothers perform actions with toys using the English words ‘whoops’ and ‘there’.

The scientists studied reactions from one-year-old babies to their mum’s voice even when she was speaking either languages. And the same process was repeated in Greek with the same tone in the voice. The academics found that babies reproduced the same reaction regardless of whether they knew the language - proving it was all Greek to them.

Study leader Dr Merideth Gattis, of Cardiff University’s School of Psychology, said: 'What this work showed was that children could have access to understanding using simply the tone of voice. We did “whoops” and “there” in two languages and got exactly the same results - whether in English or Greek, which none of the children understood.'

Bebeluşii pot înţelege ce spun mamele lor, chiar dacă acestea vorbesc într-o limbă pe care nu au mai auzit-o niciodată, relatează Daily Mail. Potrivit unui studiu recent, cercetătorii au descoperit că un copil de un an reacţionează la fel, chiar dacă mama lui vorbeşte în engleză sau în greacă, ceea ce înseamnă că bebeluşii ţin cont de tonul vocii mamei lor şi nu neapărat de cuvinte.

Cercetătorii de la Cardiff University's School of Psychology au observat cum mamele bebeluşilor făceau mici scenete cu jucării, folosind cuvintele "ups" şi "acolo", în engleză şi în greacă. Astfel, ei au urmărit reacţiile copiilor de un an la cuvintele mamelor în diferite limbi şi au descoperit că au acelaşi comportament, tonul vocii fiind cel mai important.

Experimentul a fost realizat pe un eşantion de 84 de copii, cu vârste cuprinse între 14 şi 18 luni, timp de un an. Potrivit specialiştilor, este mai important cum spun părinţii anumite lucruri şi nu ce anume zic.

Inclusiv înjurăturile sau furia pot fi receptate doar din tonul vocii, însă specialiştii recomandă înlocuirea cuvintelor urâte. Din acest motiv, până când copiii ating vârsta la care pot vorbi, părinţii au un limbaj exagerat atunci când vorbesc cu ei.

Chiar dacă unii părinţi susţin că nu ştiu ce să le vorbească bebeluşilor, specialiştii îi încurajează, susţinând că este bine pentru cei mici, dar să aibă grijă la tonul vocii.

Un alt studiu recent, citat de New York Times, susţine că bebeluşii sunt capabili să înţeleagă şi să diferenţieze vocea mamei chiar din perioada în care sunt în pântecul ei, tot în funcţie de ton şi de ritmul vocii.
