Bucharest to host the Gay Parade 2009 on Friday and Saturday

Romanian “Accept” association organizes, as part of the Gay Fest week, a Gay Parade on Saturday, May 23 from 5pm to 7pm approved by the local City Hall for about 500 people. However, the City Hall also approved other parades organized by two associations that wish to "promote normality".
Over 700 gendarmes will be deployed in the streets of the capital to maintain public order this weekend, for the gay pride parade and the counter-rallies “For normality”, according to the head of the Bucharest Gendarmerie, Gavrila Pop.

“We cannot speak of a high security risk, given that the marches will be held on Saturday, when traffic and activity in Bucharest are considerably lower. There were no threats. There is some sort of ‘folklore’ that appears on the Internet in these cases, but we take into consideration only what seems to be a serious threat,” he said.

The first action against the gay movement is organized by the Alfa Culture Association and will be held on Friday, at 5 p.m. with some 1,000 people expected to join in, in a march from the George Enescu Street to Unirii Square.

The second action of the sort will be organized by the New Right Association and will be held on Saturday, at 1pm where 300 people are expected. They will be taking the same route as the previous association.
In previous years, the Gay Parade was marked by violence, as extremist right-wing and religious organizations assaulted the participants. Last year, the Council of Europe voiced concern over violence directed against gay pride parade participants in several cities, including Bucharest, Budapest and Moscow.

Bucurestiul va gazdui Parada Gay 2009 vineri si sambata
