Knee cracking devices, the rack, the Spanish donkey or Judas cradle are just few of the terrible torture devices used in medieval times, which will be put on display, starting February 2nd, at the Bucharest History Museum - Sutu Palace.
One of the most used torture devices used for the interrogation of prisoners in the old times, present in every torture chamber, the rack is a wooden where the prisoner’s members were stretched until the joints and muscles snapped, causing unbearable pain.
Another torture instrument favored by the Inquisition is the Iron Maiden – a woman-shaped metal cage with spikes on the inside, which entered the prisoner’s body when the door was closed. As the spikes did not touch any vital organ, death did not come instantly, so the prisoner could confess.
Another torture device is the so-called Judas cradle, which consists of a wooden pyramid upon which the prisoner was slowly lowered like on a chair, so the sharp tip would enter his body via the anus.
The exhibition comprises 55 torture devices, coming from Poland, as part of the personal collection of Piotr Buczkowskieg.

Dispozitive de sfaramare a genunchilor, banca de alungire a membrelor, capra vrajitoarelor sau "leaganul lui Iuda" sunt doar cateva dintre cele mai ingrozitoare instrumente de tortura utilizate in epoca medievala. Toate vor putea fi vazute de aproape din 2 februarie, la Muzeul de Istorie al Bucurestiului, la Palatul "Sutu".
Unul dintre cele mai utilizate instrumente in timpul interogatoriilor este banca pentru intindere, care se gasea in toate salile de tortura. Este vorba de un pat cu picioare pe care era culcat prizonierul, care era intins pana la ruperea muschilor, fapt ce ii producea dureri de nedescris.
"Fecioara de fier" este un instrument facut celebru de Inchizitie. Cusca de metal, asemanata cu forma unei fecioare, avea pe interior un sistem complicat de ace care intrau treptat in trup, odata ce usa era inchisa. Scopul torturii era obtinerea de marturii ale ereticilor inainte de a fi ucisi. Acele intrau in membre, in abdomen, piept si cap, fara a provoca moartea imediat.
"Leaganul lui Iuda" e primul instrument modern de tortura. Acesta consta in mentinerea in stare de veghe a acuzatului, pentru infrangerea lui psihica. Condamnatul este asezat in varful piramidei, de unde este coborat brusc, de repetate ori, peste un ascutis care ii intra in noada barbatului, iar in cazul femeilor in vagin.
